Claire Hankey is a mixed media artist living by the Thames Estuary in Leigh on sea, Essex. Her work is created in response to changes in the seasons, daily walks and childhood memories of spending time immersed in nature. Claire’s work is mainly abstract, richly textured and created in multiple layers.

She uses natural materials within her art making process and creates her own unique brushes from foraged plants and driftwood collected from the estuary.

Claire loves to create work combining different techniques including photocollage, working with fluid paint and using a hand-held sander to reveal earlier layers within a painting. Her work has a sense of history and has been described as ‘sensory’, ‘spectral’ and ‘atmospheric’.
