About

Alex Jones

Alex Jones is a Brighton, East Sussex-based artist who primarily focuses on the juxtaposition of written and material language as visual construction methods in painting. He combines linguistic architecture with the dialect of formal structures, aiming for a kind of neutrality within the created image.

Language follows a universal formula; only the meanings attributed to it give it significance. Jones aims to strip language of its communicative purpose and instead use it as a building material. Written language employs syntax as a structural mechanism, creating text arrangements as forms. The image that emerges from reading the words is incidental; language functions as a system to position a form. The secondary glyphs emerge from the spaces between language, representing pauses in speech and the method of reading. Jones is more interested in words not for what they convey, but for how they occupy space.

Jones has exhibited in galleries and art fairs in Europe and America, and his work is held in private collections worldwide.

I find it interesting that we are programmed to read and understand language that forms an image based on what we read.
