About

Rita Matos

Rita Matos is a London based Portuguese abstract artist.  By exploring the emotional depth of memory and perception, Rita’s practice focuses on how personal experiences and emotions influence the way we see the world around us.  Using a process of layering, adding, and erasing, the abstract compositions created reflect the layering and shifting nature or memories. In her work, there is a fine balance between spontaneity and control, a dance between accident an intention, where the addition and subtraction of layers throughout the painting process shape the final narrative of the work.

Colour plays a vital role in the work, serving as an emotional anchor, adding richness and depth. The overlapping and blending of hues create moments of clarity and of ambiguity. The nostalgia present in the work carries an emotional weight that encourages curiosity and empathy. Each piece offers a visual expression of the fleeting and layered qualities of memory, drawing viewers into a sensory and emotional exploration of the spaces and moments that shape us.

Rita’s work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions and is held in private collections worldwide.

Painting allows me to give form to emotions that are otherwise difficult to articulate.
